Meet the creator of the Calaveras Stick Puppet Theater
Dave Gutierrez is a native of Rock Springs. He has spent most of his life as an educator, first as a high school teacher and as a college bureaucrat at Western Wyoming Community College.

Dave is proud of his Mexican-American heritage. His parents moved to Rock Springs from southern Colorado during World War II to work in the coal mines. He was born in 1947 and accepted into a community, the home of 157 distinct nationalities, that reflects its immigrant history.

Dave Gutiérrez es originario de Rock Springs. Ha pasado la mayor parte de su vida como educador, primero como profesor de secundaria y como burócrata universitario en Western Wyoming Community College.

Dave está orgulloso de su herencia mexicano-estadounidense. Sus padres se mudaron a Rock Springs desde el sur de Colorado durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial para trabajar en las minas de carbón. Nació en 1947 y fue aceptado en una comunidad, hogar de 157 nacionalidades distintas, que refleja su historia de inmigración.

History of the Calaveras Stick Puppet Theater

The inspiration for the display was a famous painting entitled Dia de los Muertos by Mexican master Diego Rivera. It pictures a celebration of the Day of the Dead festivities that Rivera, together with fellow artist Frida Kahlo, attended in a park in Mexico City. Both, together with an array of colorful street characters, are portrayed in the painting and in the 3-D display.

Dave Gutierrez first conceived of his Calaveras Stick Puppet Theater as part of Actors’ Mission’s Gala 20th Anniversary Celebration in 2023. He set it up as a display and also acted as a vendor selling individual stick puppets and other crafted or found objects in a booth

On display – Cheyenne Botanic Gardens, October 21 – November 1, 2025

As part of the annual community celebration of Day of the Dead Cheyenne Botanical Gardens will host Dave Gutierrez and the Calaveras Stick Puppet Display.

The public is invited to the Botanical Gardens from October 21 through November 1 as part of this year’s celebration.

Historia del Teatro de Marionetas de Palos Calaveras

La inspiración para la exhibición fue una famosa pintura titulada Día de los Muertos del maestro mexicano Diego Rivera. Representa una celebración de las festividades del Día de Muertos a las que Rivera, junto con su colega artista Frida Kahlo, asistieron en un parque de la Ciudad de México. Ambos, junto con una variedad de coloridos personajes callejeros, están representados en la pintura y en la exhibición tridimensional.

Dave Gutiérrez concibió por primera vez su Calaveras Stick Puppet Theatre como parte de la celebración del vigésimo aniversario de la gala de Actors’ Mission en 2023. Lo instaló como una exhibición y también actuó como vendedor vendiendo títeres de palo individuales y otros objetos elaborados o encontrados en un stand.

Como parte de la celebración comunitaria anual del Día de Muertos, el Jardín Botánico Cheyenne albergará a Dave Gutiérrez y la exhibición de marionetas Calaveras Stick.

El público está invitado al Jardín Botánico del 21 de octubre al 1 de noviembre como parte de la celebración de este año.

Stick Puppets for Sale
As part of the program, Dave Gutierrez will be selling individual handcrafted stick puppets. In addition, he will sell some stick puppets costumed as characters he has created. He will also sell various found art and hand-crafted objects that he has selected and re-imagined.
