Susan has spent more than 30 years working in the field of horticulture. She co-owned and operated the family business, McIntyre’s Garden Center, here in Cheyenne for 16 years specializing in annuals, perennials, trees, shrubs and houseplants. As President of Garden Centers of Colorado, she developed a training curriculum for new garden center employees and authored several gardening articles for the Denver Post. She also had a television program about gardening on CBS News Channel 5 and did radio informational spots for several radio stations in Cheyenne. She lived in Windsor Colorado for 14 years and owned a small produce farm where she raised 2 ½ acres of locally grown produce and more than 2,000 vegetable starts. She also served on the Windsor Tree Board. During Susan’s time farming, she came down with West Nile which snowballed into reactivated Epstein-Barr and she was forced to close her business in 2016. Susan returned to Cheyenne to heal and help her mother with her aging father who suffers from late onset dementia. In an effort to get better, Susan turned to herbs and meditation to facilitate her recovery and subsequently went to herbalism school at Equinox Center of Herbal Studies in Fort Collins, Colorado where she completed a 400-hour certification program in 2019 to supplement her 30 years of experience working with plants. Susan currently owns The Hawthorn Tree in Downtown Cheyenne which opened in June of 2020. The Hawthorn tree has more than 150 different herbs and teas and hosts meditation on the 2nd floor of the building. The Hawthorn Tree has three herbalists on staff who prepare custom blended teas and other herbal preparations for pleasure and medicinal purposes.
