Garden Tip Plan to Grow Peas

Edible peas yield well on the High Plains. They are available in several forms: bushy (suitable for pots), vining (you'll need a trellis up to 7' high), shelling peas (only eat the pod inside), edible pod sugar snap peas (the pea and pod are sweet tender eating) and snow peas (the flat pea pod, common in Chinese food).

Peas are best planted in this country around mid-April through early May. They need rich soil in a well-lit site. Don't grow them up against a hot fence or wall. Start your pea seeds in a moist paper towel. Roll the paper towel up and place in plastic bag for 3 to 5 days prior to planting. Gently set the sprouting seeds 1/2 inch deep into the soil and lightly backfill the seed. After planting, keep them moist. Provide a trellis for vining peas where needed.
